“That’s a workmanship issue. It’s the road surfacing at fault.

“The surfaces were not laid to the tolerances set out in the design.

“There is concern about the impact of use of the road at 70mph on the joints.”

Last month’s announcement triggered calls the bridge’s opening had been rushed.

Scottish Labour transport spokesman Neil Bibby said: “Transport Scotland has known about these faults for months and they have chosen to keep that information from the public.

“Road users found out about carriageway closures at the last minute and officials have confirmed there are more closures to come.

“The SNP transport minister must give a full explanation and account for his handling of the project.

Until now the cost has been £95 per term but from September 2018 that is shooting up to £130 per term – £390 per year.

Not only is it going to cost more but applications will only be accepted between 09:00 on Monday 9th July and 17:00 on Friday 20 July 2018. Previously there have been a number of windows of opportunity to apply.

Following our success at Bronze level we focused on fuel usage and staff training to ensure the safety first ethos in or company became the overarching measure of our success. We took advantage of the training on offer from FORS, we witnessed a MPG improvement of around 16% due to greater vehicle utilisation and positive driver behaviour change. Silver and our original Gold accreditation have seen us develop and improve across all parts of our business.

We are monitoring and reviewing the health and fitness of our drivers using medical declaration forms which are issued on employment and reviewed thereafter. We also provide detailed health guidance and conduct eyesight checks and tests.

We have a detailed strategy for recruiting drivers, however as the industry faces a shortage of driving staff we are looking as part of our strategy to recruit from both in and outside the transport industry. We have a low turn over of staff within our business.

Our work environment is generally low noise, as part of our noise assessment we have taken measures to reduce even further unwarranted noise by introducing a reduced vehicle idling policy. This has helped reduce noise but also produced decreased fuel consumption and reduced vehicle emissions.

Modal shift and alternative vehicle usage in our sector of the industry have proved to be non existent. We are keen to exploit new technology but as a rural based business serving locations around the south of England fossil fuel alternatives and modal change are not available.

We are continually investigating ways to improve our business and ensure we reduce our carbon footprint. The non-packaged, non-standardised load size sector of logistics is different to standardised movement, that said we have introduced new loading methods to ensure consolidation is possible and devised delivery plans to reduce multiple same site deliveries.

Gold re-approval ensures we have achieved the highest grade currently available via FORS. It also ensures our supply chain partners have confidence in our business when they engage with us.

First-year Scholars in Loughborough Visit

Chesterfield’s first-year academy scholars enjoyed a new experience last Wednesday (February 21), when they visited both Loughborough College and University to undergo physical testing.

As well as proving beneficial for their own fitness, the visits also provided the scholars with information that will assist them in their college assignments.

“Our education partners, Loughborough College, offered to do us a day of physical testing,” academy education and welfare officer James Ford explained.

“So, we did some sophisticated body fat testing and power testing on a bike which involved sprinting.

“After that we did a max endurance test, where the lads had masks on their faces measuring the oxygen that they were breathing out and their fitness. They sprint for 10 minutes until they can’t go any more, they are clipped in to a body harness.

“A couple of the lads achieved higher than average test results, they did really well, the players were also taken over to see the facilities that are used by England athletics, so all in all it was a great day out.”

As well as liaising with both the college and university, Ford spoke with the likes of academy coach Miguel Llera and academy manager Mark Smith as to what tests the players were able to participate in.

“Initially it was planned where they wouldn’t have had anything intense on the day before, but the Derbyshire Senior Cup semi-final with Buxton fell the night before the visit,” Ford said.

“So, some of the lads unfortunately couldn’t do all the testing, but they all took part in at least one or two of them.

“Now we’ve got our test data which we can use to perhaps compare against the field testing and see how accurate it is – especially with the body fat testing, which we take almost every two weeks.”

So, how did the scholars find the day and what will they have taken from it?

“They loved it!” Ford asserted. “A day out of the football club is great for them, they can see what else is going on and be in a different environment.

“All of them learned a lot while they were there, which will help them for their college work.

“For some of them, it’ll be that there’s a lab-setting, they’ll have all done fitness testing on a field, but now they know there’s a lab setting where there’s a more accurate way of measuring and testing fitness.

“They’ve been to a university campus and seen the size of it, so if football doesn’t work out either with Chesterfield or in five-10 years’ time, they know what’s out there in terms of education if that’s what they aspire too.”

Ford himself found the visit to be a success and is already planning on doing more visits of the same ilk in the future.

“We’d love to make the visits annual and may be see if we could get some ties with other universities, but if not and as long as we’re in partnership with Loughborough college that will always remain,” he added.

Mayor Palmer underlines transport connections as key to success for Fenland

A transport conference was told that Fenland holds the key to unlocking the potential of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Mayor James Palmer told the conference – held at the GER Club, March on Thursday – that “one of my top priorities is to fight and lobby for Fenland to get the investment it needs into its transport infrastructure”.

He said this could involve the rail line to Wisbech, the M11 extension “or an A47 that is fully dualled between Peterborough and Wisbech.

“Cambridgeshire and Peterborough will only achieve its full economic potential if Fenland achieves its full economic potential and this will only happen if we are prepared to overhaul transport infrastructure, both road and rail across the area.”

Mayor Palmer was among the guest speakers at the event, organised by the Fenland Transport and Access Group (TAG) with support and sponsorship from train operator CrossCountry.

Chris Leech, CrossCountry’s business community manager, also told how CrossCountry was investing in its network and working with local Community Rail Partnerships to make a positive impact on the communities they serve.

He said: “CrossCountry, alongside our industry partners Network Rail and Greater Anglia understand just how important rail services can be for the communities we serve.

“This conference marks a great foundation for Fenland District Council’s development of a new transport strategy. We look forward to working them on its implementation, helping deliver further benefits to this important community.”

The conference also shared information on existing transport services and included workshops and group discussions on how they can be developed while improving access for people with transport difficulties. Visitors were also given an early opportunity to help develop a new transport strategy for Fenland.

Findings from the conference will now be reviewed over the next few weeks.

The conference was also supported by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships, Cambridgeshire County Council, Wisbech Town Council, Care Network and other local community groups and organisations.

Simon King, Fenland District Council’s Cabinet member for transport, said: “The Transport Conference was an extremely successful and positive event.

“I’d particularly like to thank Wendy Otter (the council’s transport development manager), and her transport colleagues for organising this inaugural event and also partners and everyone who came along on the day to support it.”

He added that the Brexit vote had emboldened those who may previously have privately harboured racist views to express them publicly. “The fact that the sharpest rise in racially motivated and faith based forms of hate crime on public transport in absolute terms has occurred since 2016 certainly points towards this,” he said.

“While some may suggest this spike is due to increased confidence in reporting, we fear these figures represent just the tip of the iceberg of a rise in hate crimes against LGBT people,” he said.

Two controversial roads to speed up travel times for people across Reading have won £29.2 million in funding.

The funding will be pumped into the South Reading and East Reading Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) schemes.

Businesses cases for both schemes, which demonstrate high value for money, have been approved by the Berkshire Local Transport Body.
