Trade and Innovation Debates Intensify ahead of Global Road Transport Congress in Oman

MUSCAT, OMAN, July 2, 2018/APO Group/ —

The future of road transport will be mapped out at the IRU (www.IRU.org) World Congress from 6 to 8 November this year in Muscat, Oman.

With four months to the Congress, IRU Managing Director, Boris Blanche, met today with HE Eng. Salim bin Mohammed Al Naimi, Oman’s Undersecretary of Transport, to brief him on progress.

Talks centred on two key issues in the congress: developing and boosting trade corridors within and beyond the Middle East, and fostering innovation in transport and mobility with both new start-up firms and established companies.

“Transport, logistics and mobility are changing quickly, becoming increasingly digital, connected and automated” said Mr Blanche. “Straddling ancient and modern trade corridors, and with a comprehensive logistics strategy and ongoing reform of passenger transport, Oman is an excellent place for our industry, governments and the international community to come together.”

He added, “With ASYAD’s strong commitment, I’m looking forward to the IRU Congress to help lead change in the future of passenger and freight transport.”

Hosted by ASYAD and the Oman Ministry for Transport and Communications, the IRU Congress will bring together leading thinkers, including Jose Manuel Barroso, former President of the European Commission, Joachim Drees, CEO of MAN Group, Nick Earle from Virgin Hyperloop One, and artificial intelligence guru Rand Hindi amongst many others.

England Women U20 squad to tour Canada announced

  • England Women Under 20 to face Canada and USA
  • Three match series takes place in August

England Women U20 head coach Jo Yapp has announced a 26-player squad to travel to Canada in August.

England Women U20 will face Canada Women U20 twice and USA Women U20 once during the three-match series. The three games will be available live online via .

Of the 26 selected, there are three new players to the squad, with Jessica Cooksey, Ellie Green and Bethany Wilcock named for the first time. Abigail Dow, Zoe Harrison, Lagilagi Tuima and Hannah Botterman all represented the Red Roses during the 2017/18 season but return to the age group for the tour.

“This tour to Canada is a fantastic opportunity for us,” said Yapp.

“It allows us to build on the time we’ve already had together this season as a squad and continue developing the players that are coming through the women’s pathway.

“Getting to play three away matches, including against Canada in Canada will be a tough challenge, but also an exciting opportunity for this group of players. We can’t wait to get out there and know this tour, like any international one, will offer a great learning experience for the squad.”

Matches will be hosted at Acadia University (Wolfville) and Wanderers Grounds (Halifax) on Friday 10 August, Tuesday 14 August and Saturday 18 August.

England Women U20 last played Canada Women U20 in a three-Test series at Trent College, Nottingham in 2016 with England winning the series 3-0. The side last played USA Women U20 in the 2013 Nations Cup, losing 17-27 again at Trent College, Nottingham.

Transport Scotland says new bypass will reduce major traffic through Aberdeen by 30%

The Aberdeen bypass is expected to reduce traffic through a major route by 30%, according to a transport body.

The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route is expected to open this autumn, but the road will have a positive impact on the busy traffic between Charleston and Blackdog on the existing A90, according to Transport Scotland.

It is expected that the traffic on that stretch of road will be reduced by 30% when the AWPR opens.

A Transport Scotland spokesman said: “The AWPR is expected to reduce traffic between Charleston and Blackdog on the existing A90 by more than 30%.

“Transport Scotland, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council are in the process of reaching an agreement to allow the necessary actions to be taken to safeguard the road condition.”

The stretch of road from Stonehaven to Blackdog will be renamed the A92 when the AWPR opens later this year.

The bypass will become the new A90.

The decrease in traffic has been welcomed by north-east politicians.

Labour North East MSP Lewis Macdonald said: “The AWPR is designed to allow long-distance traffic to bypass Aberdeen, and to allow local drivers to make some journeys round rather than through the city.

“A 30% reduction in traffic on Anderson Drive and The Parkway would therefore be welcome, and in line with plans drawn up by ministers as long ago as 2003.

“To get that benefit, though, the AWPR must continue to be a near-motorway standard road, without new junctions added to service new developments on the edge of the city.”

Scottish Liberal Democrat North East MSP Mike Rumbles said: “I expect the road to make a significant difference to journey times and it should help improve congestion.

“However, with multiple delays to the opening date we will have to wait until next summer to see the full benefits.”

Councillor Ross Grant, roads spokesman at Aberdeen City Council, said: “As an administration we have committed £75 million toward the delivery of the AWPR.

“We are confident that drivers will experience significant improvements between Charleston and Blackdog.”

Italy’s Transport Minister Toninelli proposed a plan to crackdown tragic deaths of children in cars

This dangerous absent-mindeded behaviour is known as “forgotten baby syndrome” and it can end with the death of the child from heatstroke.

One child has suffered this horrible death every year in Italy since 2011.

But Danilo Toninelli, the country’s new Transport Minister, announced last weekend the government is ready to tackle this issue by making compulsory for parents to have child seats fitted with alarms.

The new technology would send sound warnings on the driver’s car electronic keys or smartphone, and it should cost around £88.

Mr Toninelli, a member of the anti-establishment Five Star Movement which earlier this year formed a government with far-right wing Matteo Salvini’s Lega, also said that around 800 similar deaths have been recorded in the United States in recent years.

Despite Italy’s much smaller death toll, he added that “even a single case in unacceptable.”

His remark follows the death of a nearly one-year-old girl who in May was forgotten in the car by her father in Pisa.

Another similar death happened just over a year ago near the city of Arezzo, where a mother forgot her 16-month-old outside her workplace.

The baby died of a heart attack after being left in the sun for six hours, and was discovered by her desperate mother only after she returned to the car.

Mr Toninelli explained he plans to make this new device as affordable and cost-effective as possible to help family-in-need.

He continued: ”We will take the proposal to the council of ministers shortly and we will assist people with the expense by making it tax deductible.

“These are the measures that can really change people’s lives.”

He added his ministry will also run an awareness campaign.

The plan was welcomed by the majority of the Five Star Movement’s supporters on the party’s blog

The new proposal could come into effect as early as in autumn and is expected to be applied to all parents with children up to the age of 11, affecting about two million car owners.

The proposalhasbeen generallywell-receivedby the Five Star Movement base, which usually discusses new proposals on the party’s official blog.

But one user said to beskepticalover the measure, blasting it as “technological fascism”.

He wrote: Have you lost your mind? Do you want blanket control?

“When are we going to have the obligatory installation of subcutaneous chips? Obviously for our safety?”

Unreliable public transport ‘stops poor families finding work’

Unaffordable and unreliable public transport is cutting off the poorest families in the north of England from crucial job opportunities, a study has found.

Researchers from Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield, commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), interviewed residents in neighbourhoods across Greater Manchester and Leeds city regions.

Interviewees complained that local transport was expensive, unreliable and slow, making it harder for them to attend job interviews and hold on to paid employment.

The research found that residents were reliant on buses, as running a car and taking the train were too expensive.

Workers complained they were unable to guarantee punctuality because buses were frequently late, meaning they were disregarded by potential employers. The report found that job seekers often turned down jobs because their potential earnings were too low compared with the high transport costs.

The report highlighted the fact that low-skilled manual work in manufacturing or in warehouses was often in locations on the edge of towns and cities that was underserved by public transport.

A 49-year-old interviewee from Leeds expressed frustration at the disconnect: “There’s a place called Sherburn-in-Elmet and they have tons of work, big industrial estate, but there’s no bus service, it’s about 13 miles away. I do not understand why they build a big estate where there’s no transport. If you haven’t got a car you can’t have a job.”

The JRF said the report’s findings undermined advice from the Department for Work and Pensions and Jobcentre Plus that workers should search for roles up to 90 minutes from their homes, as the distance could be simply inaccessible.

A 30-year-old from Dewsbury Moor, in West Yorkshire, spoke of the dwindling help from his Jobcentre Plus: “They do not offer any advice or support with transport issues. Every now and again, an adviser will look up the nearest bus route for you, but don’t look at the practicalities of it.”

Brian Robson, the JRF’s acting head of policy and research, said the government should invest in transport networks within cities not just between them.

“Currently unaffordable and unreliable public transport is holding people back from being able to achieve a better standard of living,” he said. “With more powers being devolved to city and local leaders, now is the time to redesign our transport, housing and economic policies so that everyone can get into work and progress in their careers.”

Ed Ferrari, director of regional economic and social research at Sheffield Hallam University, said: “Buses are the backbone of local public transport in Britain and the key to employment and training opportunities for many. But problems with high fares, poor coordination between different providers and services, and lack of reliability seriously hamper the ability of low-income groups to commute to more distant jobs.

“Fundamental weaknesses in the way that bus services are regulated and subsidised are effectively locking the poorest out of the opportunities within the modern economy. Policymakers in Britain need to see investment in high quality local transport systems as an investment in national productivity and tackling inequality.”

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: “The government is spending more than £13bn through to 2020 to transform transport across the north – the biggest investment any government in history has ever made. We have also given councils extra powers to work in partnership with bus companies to improve the services passengers expect and deserve.

“We recognise that buses are vital in connecting people, homes and businesses, and we provide around £250m every year to support these services up and down the country.”

Street satisfies Khan in transport summit

Mayors welcome deal for knowledge sharing between West Midlands and London.

Lessons learned from major incidents and ways of limiting disruption to large-scale transport projects are to be shared between the West Midlands and London.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed by Transport for London and Transport for West Midlands, part of the West Midlands Combined Authority, is the first time two devolved local authorities have made a commitment to share best practice and work towards common goals.

The knowledge-sharing agreement will enable the two to learn from each other to improve not only their individual regions but also the rest of the UK.

The agreement has been welcomed by Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.

At an event on Tuesda in London’s Traffic Control Centre, both Mayors met staff who monitor the capital’s road network 24 hours a day. As well as seeing how the capital uses state-of-the-art traffic signal technology to monitor and reduce congestion the Mayors also saw how the control centre is used to coordinate major sporting events, such as the London Marathon and RideLondon, ensuring swift responses to any incidents or congestion.

With Coventry already planning a range of exciting outdoor activities as the UK City of Culture 2021 and Birmingham hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022, as well as being in talks to host the UK round of the Formula-E, it is hoped that working together to share knowledge and experience on developing customer information will ensure all these events are as successful as the London 2012 Games.

The agreement covers a range of areas in which both organisations believe they could benefit from working together.

These include:

· Sharing information on how to address and manage any potential impacts around the delivery of major transport projects, including how to make transport networks resilient while key elements are delivered

· Working with local businesses and freight organisations to help consolidate and re-time freight deliveries to reduce congestion and improve air quality – particularly around construction projects

· Analysis of road and public transport flows between the West Midlands and London to improve connectivity and allow for better traffic and congestion modelling between the cities

· Monitoring developments in ‘Mobility as a Service’, as well as a coordinated response towards new disruptive technologies in the future

· Working together to improve open-data for developers through online portals such as TfL’s API platform and identifying new ways to collect key transport data to increase productivity

Sadiq Khan said: “London and Birmingham face many of the same challenges so I am delighted that the signing of this agreement further strengthens our commitment to work together. Among other things, sharing information will help us better deal with major incidents, manage world-class sporting events and reduce congestion, improving our cities for everyone.”

Andy Street commented: “In the next few years the West Midlands will be playing host to huge events requiring us to be at the top of our game in terms of managing transport, particularly on our public transport networks.

“Transport for London has a wealth of experience in accommodating extra travellers and we’re keen to tap into this knowledge ahead of the Commonwealth Games and Coventry City of Culture. This Memorandum of Understanding is an important first step in making sure all future events are remembered for the show the West Midlands puts on, not for any challenges the transport networks might face.”

Gareth Powell, managing director for Surface Transport at TfL added: “This agreement will see us share our experience from the last two decades as an integrated transport authority while learning a range of new skills and ideas from the West Midlands.

“We can also work together on developing and delivering common policies, like improving air quality and reducing the impact of major transport projects on local residents and businesses, which will benefit the UK more widely by boosting connectivity in every region.”

Last month, all eight regional and city-wide Mayors – four Conservative and four Labour – met in Liverpool and called on the government for greater devolution of powers and funding over skills.

At the meeting they signed a joint statement calling for further reforms to the skills system, including more control over Apprenticeship Levy funds to boost skills in their areas.

Following today’s meeting a delegation from TfL will be visiting Birmingham later in the summer to discuss how both organisations can work with the freight industry and its customers in the business community to help minimise the impact of major events and construction work.

A controversial consultation on Suffolk school transport cuts is claimed to have attracted more responses than any other in recent history – with results due to be announced this month.

Suffolk County Council (SCC) confirmed, following a Freedom of Information request, that its consultation had 4,208 responses.

Parents were asked for views on whether free transport should be removed for all home-to-school journeys except to the nearest school – whether the student lives in its catchment area or not.

The proposals received fierce opposition – particularly in rural areas where the cuts are feared to be hardest felt. More than 8,000 people signed a petition calling for SCC to withdraw the proposal.

Labour education spokesman Jack Abbott said the response showed this was an issue “which has had the highest level of the engagement of any consultation the council has ever done”.

Mr Abbott suggested the strength of feeling demonstrated the “huge impact” parents and schools fear the change will bring.

He said it was particularly significant that many schools had spoken out against the changes.

“This is something they are not usually liable to do,” he added.

“But with so many schools suffering real-terms budget cuts, I think this is almost the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Given the council’s claims it was listening to people’s views, Mr Abbott said it was important the response to the consultation thoroughly investigated the alternatives being proposed.

“If they decided to go ahead with these changes, despite 85pc of respondents saying they don’t support them, they might find that people stop engaging and dismiss their promises as merely hot air,” he added.

Gordon Jones, who is responsible for education at SCC, said the consultation was carried out because “it’s such an important decision affecting thousands of people and involving over £21m of taxpayers’ money”.

“Those results are currently being analysed and will be reported in June, alongside all the other information we have available, so that our cabinet will be able to make an informed decision in public,” he added.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who participated in the consultation. We received an overwhelming amount of feedback, which demonstrates just how important the decision is.”

A report is due on June 11.
