The Old Place Restaurant in Agoura Hills, California
The Old Place restaurant is known for country fare that has dutifully served cowboys and men who play cowboys onscreen for over four decades. Less known is that the establishment's history begins long before its stint as a Hollywood hotspot in the 1970s. In fact, its story mirrors the development of Los Angeles itself.
The Old Place's original structure was built around 1915 to serve the small, secluded village of Cornell in the Santa Monica mountains as a general store and post office. It began its evolution into the place it is today in the 1960s, when a young man by the name of Tom Runyon happened upon the spot and envisioned its potential.
Runyon had spent his early years roaming the Hollywood Hills, shooting pigeons and raising falcons in Runyon Canyon, an area his father had bought and bequeathed with the family name in 1919. Runyon’s roots are evident in the design of The Old Place. He brought the old structure back to life using salvaged materials, each with their own story. The stately bar at the main dining room’s center was imported from a saloon in Virginia City, Nevada on Runyon's private bomber (he had served as a pilot in World War II); the stool that surrounds it is a repurposed antique diving board.
Throughout the '70s, The Old Place entered into another phase of its relationship with the Old West: Located just two miles down the road from Paramount Ranch, a popular site for shooting Western films, it attracted a cadre of film stars with ties to the genre. Steve McQueen was a regular, as was Sam Peckinpah. An occasional fiction writer, Runyon was a natural-born storyteller and kindred spirit to his celebrity clientele. He made an appearance in several Westerns himself, most often as a bartender.
Photographs from the restaurant's heyday as a rustic celebrity getaway are situated on a wall in the back of The Old Place, next to a small corner that once stood in for a Canadian lodge on the original Twin Peaks series. In the next room, the original structure’s post office area remains intact and functions as a private dining area.
After Tom Runyon's passing, his son Morgan took over the spot. The menu has been updated since the '70s (when its only items were steak and clams), and the restaurant has grown to form a complex of Runyon endeavors: Next door is a winery and tasting room, and an old truck has been revamped as a coffee shop out back. But the bathrooms are still located outside, and the steak is still fired over a grill made of local oak wood.
The Old Place's overall affect is that of a walk-in time capsule, a historical relic wise to the years that have passed since it was created.

You Just Choose – Musings on the Religions of Thailand and the NFL
Wat Hup Ta Khrot temple left an indelible mark on my psyche. Not only because it was the first major temple complex we visited in Thailand, but it also introduced me to Thai polytheism. The idea that different gods and even religions could be worshiped together, side by side in peace and harmony simultaneously baffled and inspired me with their freedom to choose.
The freedom of choice isn’t limited to this one temple or time, it’s present in all of Thai culture and history. For example, the Unesco World Heritage site of Sukhothai has over 193 temples excavated and restored. These temples have Hindu and Buddhist beliefs living side by side.
Choosing, one or many gods to follow is available from the lowest peasant to the king himself. In the ancient capital Ayutthaya, a popular attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site, the kings demonstrated Hindu, Buddhist, and local spiritual belief simultaneously. Ayutthaya was named after the Ayodhya, the city in India that is the birthplace of the Hindu god Rama. The Ayutthayan kings were named after incarnations of Hindu gods like Vishnu or Rama, but they were also considered Bodhisattva. Even the ancient kings could be both Hindu gods and still quest to become Buddha.
My narrow-minded Western brain had a hard time handling the dichotomy of choice. I thought Game of Thrones taught me everything I needed to know about polytheism. In the show, the kingdoms of the realm worshiped different gods. When strangers enter the land, the kings would chop their heads off and burn them at the stake. This was nothing like Thailand. There we found something completely different, delightful and accepting. There was freedom to choose, not choose, or even choose everything.
That day in the temple complex changed me. We walked by enchanted logs that Thai spiritualists believed housed wood spirits. The believers left ribbons and flowers as an offering to the spirits who lived there. The temple courtyard overflowed with statues of Hindu gods and famous Buddhist monks, each with their own alms box in front. There was even an altar for Rahu who was, in fact, a demon that Vishnu cut in half for drinking the milk of life but, due to the milk’s power, his head and torso were immortal. Not to be outdone, the temple shop sold amulets believed to have magical powers. Literally, this was one stop shopping for all religions in Thailand.
My first thought was amazement at all of these different gods, demons, spirits, monks and even religions living side by side. My second was – how do you choose? I asked our guide – Tick- who replied: “You just choose”.
You just choose… What a liberating concept. Then Tick continued – “It doesn’t matter which god you worship because it’s always the same thing. You offer a gift, ask for a favor in return for a promise, and then fulfill your promise.” I struggled to understand how this could be so simple and universal.
I tested Tick’s theory with the one Christian God I grew up with. After all, they are all the same, right? Instead of a donation box in front of each idol, we passed a collection plate in church so there was an offering. Also, in Christianity, there is a long tradition of asking for favors from God. Jesus said in Mark 11:24 “Therefore I tell you, all things whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you receive them, and you shall have them.”
Did we have to make additional offerings in our prayers to God? In Catholicism, your priest might suggest contrition as part of the confession, usually involving some number of hail marys. In all cases, humility and belief are part of the prayer ritual. I was beginning to see what Tick is saying.
I had more western memories to draw from. After my Christian upbringing, I branched into enlightened spiritualism during my college years. Did I have a prayer ritual there too? Did I follow the same patterns without any gods?
I would set my intention and visualize that intention coming true. Sometimes I would use meditation mantras or intention boards to voice these wishes to the world. Is this like banging a gong at a temple to release your prayers to the world? Maybe there is a pattern here. Maybe Tick is right, maybe you can just choose, but how would a typical Thai person choose their god?
I can’t speak for all of Thailand, but I got to know Tick well during our time with him. Tick operated on many levels. On one hand, he had a high respect for traditional Thai cultures and beliefs. For example, he became a Buddhist monk to please his mother. True, his monkhood only lasted one month, he wasn’t a fan of sleeping on the floor or eating bland food, yet even a month of monkhood made his mother very proud.
Tick also loved western culture. As a teen, he had a pair of designer Harley Davidson jeans from the US that was very expensive and hard to get. He got in a minor motorcycle accident. He was bleeding and needed stitches but he knew the first thing the paramedics would do would be to cut off his jeans. Instead, he chose to skip the hospital and save those jeans. For the next month, he cleaned and bandaged wounds at home, but his designer jeans were safe.
His particular combination of east and west, new and old, gave me another way to understand the freedom of choice. I noticed Tick’s bike jersey he was wearing at the temple. It was a custom-made 49er fan art for Joe Montana saying “Bring him home”. How did a Thai guide, who has never been to America, just choose Joe Montana and the 49ers?
At first, I thought there was a deep, philosophical and football explanation relating to the history of the West Coast Offense. Before Bill Walsh and the 49ers, football was a one on one battle of individual superheroes like Lynn Swann, Franco Harris or Mean Joe Green. They used their physical dominance to win individual battles and sway the course of a game with one immaculate reception.
Walsh, Montana and the 49ers changed all of that. Montana would throw to a spot determined by a weakness in the opposing defense. His receivers, like Jerry Rice, would have to see the same weakness and choose to run to the right spot. It was the system that broke down opposing defenses and when it worked it was unstoppable. The collective teamwork, planning and coordination of the all the pieces led to victory and not an individual battle won or lost
I drew an immediate analogy to Thailand culture and how the collective work and cooperation of the country would bring success and happiness. I was wrong. Tick said Joe Montana looked good and won a lot of football games and that was why he liked him. It was simple, sweet, profound, and got me thinking.
Maybe Thai people picked their gods like we pick our football teams. Sometimes a team or god is on a winning streak and the fans take notice. Other times, they are just your hometown favorites that you grew up with. Every temple we passed in Thailand had a statue of a famous local monk that had made a name for himself for the local worshipers. Other times, you might just like Joe Montana’s blue eyes or Vishnu’s blue skin for pure aesthetics. There is probably a reason why NFL teams work so hard on their logos and Hindu gods are so colorful.
More and more in this world, it seems like there is a tendency to judge people for their personal choices. Perhaps it doesn’t matter which god you pray to or football team you root for. Since, for all intents and purpose, they are the same. There is no reason to not enjoy the pageantry of the NFL or the splendor of an exotic temple, even if it isn’t your team playing or the gods you believe in. Accepting the freedom to choose gives a traveler the ability to enjoy the new and unique without judgment or prejudice, and at the end of the day, isn’t freedom of choice what it’s all about?

London transport strikes latest: Tube, Southern and BA bring capital to standstill
A trio of strikes will strike travelers by air and rail in London next week, with Southern rail, London Underground and British Airways employees all to take commercial action.Tube staff are on strike in London on Monday, and on Tuesday chauffeurs will begin three days of strikes across Southern rail network, stopping all Southern trains from running. Bachelor's Degree workers are to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday.Talks in between London Underground and unions ended without contract on Friday, nevertheless a new round of talks is prepared for Saturday."We will be participating in and eagerly anticipate hearing exactly what they are using,"stated TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes If the strike goes on-- from 6pm on Sunday-- all stations in zone 1, including rail stations at all major rail interchanges, will be closed. There will be restricted services in external boroughs.Transport for London said that though it would put on extra bus services, it anticipated them to be congested. The dispute in between Transportation for London and the
RMT and TSSA unions is over the effects of closing ticket offices and shedding numerous staff under previous London Mayor Boris
Johnson.RMT general secretary Mick Cash stated: "In spite of substantial efforts by the union negotiating group, London Underground have stopped working to come up with any severe plans to take on the staffing and security crisis caused by the axing of
almost 900 safety-critical station tasks. "Steve Griffiths, London Underground's chief operating officer, called on unions to call off the strike, but said:"It is clear that some more personnel for stations are required."TfL said it was committed to looking at recommendations-- in a current report by London Travelwatch-- into the closure of ticket offices.Rail visitors will also face severe disruption, with the Southern rail strike to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The service operates in
south London, Sussex, Surrey and parts of Hampshire, and there are anticipated to be severe knock-on hold-ups on Thursday.Limited replacement buses will link Brighton and London,
and will take passengers to stations served by neighbouring train networks. The strike was cut from 6 days after discussions, though Aslef stated there could be 3 additional strike days at the end of the month. The dispute centres on the concern of driverless trains, and Mick Whelan, the basic secretary of the Aslef drivers union stated that-- though the union would participate in talks with transport secretary Chris Grayling and the RMT ahead of the walkout-- he did not forsee any
factor the strike would be called off. There will also be chaos for air tourists, with British Airways cabin crew to start a two-day strike on Tuesday. The strike will result in some Heathrow flights will be cancelled or rescheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday, however all scheduled passengers need to fly on those days. Flights will run as typical from Gatwick and London City. The conflict centres on what the Unite union has called"poverty pay". New employees make just ₤ 12,000 standard salary, although the airline says full-time staff earn a minimum of ₤ 21,000 a year after additional hourly payments, commission and allowances for flights they work.

Councillors reconsider Suffolk’s school transport proposals next week
The stalled consultation on totally free school transport in Suffolk should restart next month with the general public being asked to think about 3 options.Suffolk County Council's cabinet will look again at its assessment plans next Tuesday after being informed by the council's Examination Committee to think again about proposals it advanced in September since it was felt the pre-consultation with interested celebrations had actually not been comprehensive enough. But this time the public will be asked to think about three options.Option One
is as before with a wholesale modification in September 2019 to Suffolk only using the services required by law, which would lead to 1,050 pupils losing entitlement to totally free transportation and 1,950 losing it to their existing school but being able to secure free travel to their closest school.Option 2 would see children who currently get complimentary transportation keeping it, however brand-new beginners facing the same journey would not, so it would take until 2025 for Suffolk to just be using the legal minimum, costing an extra ₤ 8.8 million.Option 3 is to do absolutely nothing, however this would include making cost savings in other areas.Unveiling the assessment today Gordon Jones, Cabinet member for kids's services,
education and skills, said of Choice 3:"I don't believe it would be restricted to carry and education-- it's across the council. We have to make cost savings in transportation and we're trying to get a system that's fit for function in 2019. "Given that September the council has actually consulted 200 individuals and held 28 events, discussing the concerns with heads, parents 'agents, guvs, bus operators and others.Cllr Jones stated he needed to accept the Scrutiny Committee's view on the previous pre-consultation, which was not a legal requirement, however the Assessment Institute was now satisfied with what they have actually done." I think we're all set to choose particular," Cllr Jones said."The consultation is an intricate one since almost every town impacted will come at it from a different angle."That is why the propositions consist of 12'regional solutions'to aim to tailor travel to needs.
They include hub collections where kids are gotten in a town rather of the bus stopping near far-flung homes. They want schools to take a look at incredible start times so where two buses are had to serve two schools beginning at 8.45 am only one bus would be required if one school started 15 minutes earlier.Schools served by the same bus could arrange staff training days, so the bus is not kept running for simply one school. They likewise recommend utilizing larger lorries: instead of 4 taxis, one minibus might do a rural route. If the consultation is approved, it will run from December 12 to February 28. David Wood, the county's Liberal Democrat, Green and Independent Group Leader, stated:"I am not persuaded that Suffolk
County Council are actually thinking about any innovative options to this issue, or paying attention to the various concerns of parents and schools."The committee documents are available

Bring individuals 'beautiful' electrical automobile charging points, calls former transport minister - The Register
AEV Bill Britain's brand-new network of charging points for battery operated cars ought to be "iconic and stunning" much like the telephone box, according the ex-minister in charge of working out their place in the Automated and Electric Cars Bill. This comes
from the report and 3rd reading debate of the AEV Expense, which occurred in the Commons on Monday night.John Hayes,
former minister at the Department for Transportation, said that "one need to recognise a charging point, as we identify a telephone box, a pillar box", and concluded that the points "must be stunning, by the method."
The Lincolnshire Tory MP has actually formerly recommended the charging points be called after him, in the same vein as London's "Boris Bikes".
After Shadow Transport Minister Karl Turner discussed the points had already been called "Hayes hooks" in committees, the former minister said he was "thrilled that [Turner] has actually confirmed that they are going to bear my name, which I anticipate the Minister will likewise confirm."
Hayes restated his support for a nationwide design competitors for charging points, and called for more "human infrastructure", such as specialists and engineers qualified to deal with electrical and self-governing tech, in order to get the program off the ground - along with the value of on-street charging being constant in kind and payment approach around the nation.Later, right before
the argument closed, Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay wished to talk about software and lorry ownership. After briefly pointing out a theoretical mishap involving"an errant sheep, a drunken cyclist and tin of paint falling from a white Transit van on the Thanet Method"as possible a future circumstance a self-governing automobile might have to deal with, it was then time for the Arnold Schwarzenegger references.Mackinlay referenced Overall Recall's JohnnyCabs as he outlined a vision of a future where
personal cars and truck ownership is nearly non-existent. He concluded his remarks on a apocalyptic note, by bringing up a prospective Terminator
future where the driverless lorries switch on us due to "Taxinet", or more most likely hostile hacking action by another state causing mass accidents. The modifications Aside from making entertaining remarks, MPs were there to go over proposed amendments from the second reading that the Costs Committee chose to keep and discard, followed by a final summary of the new laws before the Lords get their opportunity to take a look at it.Transport secretary Chris Grayling's proposed amendment to send out data from electric lorry charging indicate the National Grid and electrical energy suppliers was authorized by the costs committee. Concerns from Labour MP Helen Goodman about privacy and individual information were addressed by Oliver Letwin of the Conservatives, who said that any information sent out would be"extremely aggregated", and duplicated that sending out data was vital to guarantee electrical systems are utilized effectively.Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Transport department, Jesse Norman MP, said entrusting "public facility operators"-- such as supermarkets, public parking lot, airports, train stations-- with installing and maintain charging points was too broad a group to legislate for.He stated an amendment that would buy Grayling to publish a nationwide strategy on electrical charge point was unneeded, as his department prepares to produce a new report on
the matter by the end of March, and to add such a requirement into the expense would be "disproportionate and unneeded". Third Reading The third reading was more basic in scope. Lots of MPs thanked Hayes for his work on the bill as transportation minister prior to he was reshuffled in January to the back benches. There was likewise conversation of air pollution, and how electrical vehicles alone would not resolve an issue brought on by HGVs, public transport and power stations.Labour MP Richard Problem quizzed Grayling on the government's readiness for the tech, referencing the "Autonomous Vehicles Readiness Index", which puts the UK at 5th for tech and 10th for facilities, roads and networks worldwide, he asked the transport secretary if he could"give any indicator of how we can start to turn that around?"Grayling, who had actually turned up to take over from Norman, didn't really address this, rather stating that Matt Hancock and DCMS were doing great work in preparing 5G tech, while funding pledges in the Budget combined with the brand-new legislation were precisely what was needed to secure the country's preparedness. There was also talk of the expense's result on insurance by previous
insurance coverage broker Tory MP Craig Tracey, which would permit owners 'policies to cover vehicles while running autonomously as long as they keep their cars and trucks'systems as much as date. He questioned the choice that owners be accountable for updates rather of manufacturers, along with asking by what means the transfer of information to insurance providers concerning autonomous crashes would be guaranteed. The final argument of the AEV Bill was intriguing, both for the information of our electric and self-governing vehicle future, however likewise for exactly what occurs to MPs when you make them remain in Parliament up until after 9pm.

Group attacks disparity over north of London's prepared transportation investment
Planned transportation financial investment in London is two-and-a-half times greater per person than in the north of England, inning accordance with a new study.London will get ₤ 4,155 per individual compared to just ₤ 1,600 in the North West, North East and Yorkshire and the Humber areas integrated, think tank IPPR North said. The organisation declared there"should be significant concern "amongst roadway and rail users over the disparity. It included that England will continue to be"dangerously unbalanced "without further costs outside the capital.(PA Graphics)Transport Secretary Chris Grayling triggered anger in July in 2015 by supporting a new ₤
30 billion Crossrail 2 plan in London and the South East days after a series of rail electrification tasks in Wales, the Midlands and the North were axed or downgraded.Mr Grayling claims per individual spending is greater in the North West than the South East when local transport plans are taken into consideration, and he is "really pleased to stand up and be relied on our record for transport for the North ". IPPR North's computations are based on analysis of data from the Treasury and the Federal government's Infrastructure and Projects Authority. The Federal government's own breakdown of the figures recommends there is a relatively even investing pattern throughout areas, with ₤ 1,353 per individual
in north-west England compared with ₤ 1,026 in London. But IPPR North declared this analysis could be deceptive, stating that less than half of organized costs is included. The Federal government said Transportation for London tasks should not be consisted of
as they get no main Government funding, but IPPR North argued it is wrong to omit all local spending, and ministers need to be"held to
account"for enabling the Greater London Authority to maintain its business rates. Nearly ₤ 12 billion of Transport for London costs is excluded following an offer in between Transportation Secretary Chris Grayling and London mayor Sadiq Khan which allows London to keep its own company rates to invest in transport, the think tank said. These profits have actually traditionally been pooled, in part, to re-balance the economy, it added. The group also kept in mind that the Federal government analysis only covers the duration approximately 2020/21, after which a"large percentage "of spending is because of go to London.IPPR North senior research fellow Luke Raikes said:"In spite of the Transport Secretary's recent declarations, London is still set to get practically three times more transportation investment per individual than the North. This is indefensible. "The North has actually been underfunded in comparison to London for decades, and our figures show that ministers have actually failed to redress this imbalance. "This failure will continue to keep back the North and the country up until the Federal government acts."He included that statutory body Transportation for the North has to be given similar powers to Carry for London so it can motivate business investment and borrow for its own facilities, instead of"going cap in hand to main government ". A Government spokesman described IPPR North's analysis as"completely deceptive
"and" highly unrepresentative "as just a narrow set of tasks have actually published long-lasting costs projections beyond 2020/21. He continued:" It is also just incorrect for IPPR North to suggest' London will no longer contribute to carry spending in the rest of the nation', and misinforming for their analysis to include Transport for London jobs which receive no main
government financing."Our analysis of prepared central federal government transportation investment reveals the North will receive more financial investment per person(₤ 1,039 )than the South (₤ 1,029 )."This is IPPR North's analysis of prepared main and local public/private transportation infrastructure costs from 2017/18 onwards, per individual: London: ₤ 4,155 West Midlands: ₤ 3,029 North West: ₤ 2,439 South East: ₤ 1,307 East Midlands: ₤ 1,134 East of England: ₤ 1,134 South West: ₤ 984 North East: ₤ 855 Yorkshire and the Humber: ₤ 844 The North:(North West,

Caesarea Maritima Mithraeum in Caesarea, Israel
In Caesarea Maritima you can dive in the Mediterranean Sea and explore the underwater archaeological remains of one of the ancient world wonders, the harbor built by Herod—yes, that Herod—in 13 BC. The city of Caesarea was the wealthy and cosmopolitan capital of the Roman province of Judaea. There, Jews, Samaritans, Romans, Greeks, and Syrians lived and did business more or less pacifically for centuries, before the city was conquered and destroyed.
In the 1970s, an underground vaulted room near the port was discovered by a team of archaeologists—one of several similar structures that were probably originally built as warehouses. This one, however, was special: During the end of the first century or beginning of the second century CE, it was converted into the temple of the god Mithras.
This god, originally worshiped in Persia and neighboring countries, was a recent import in the Roman world, but the mysterious cult rapidly acquired a vast popularity throughout the entire empire, in particular among the soldiers. Temples of Mithras, often called Mithraea, are found from Egypt to England, from Crimea to Portugal, and especially on the legion headquarters along the Roman borders.
Most Mithraea are underground or excavated in the rock, so as to represent the mythical grotto in which the god was supposed to be born. They all look alike: a simple, small vaulted room with two benches on the side for the adepts. In the central niche is an altar supporting a relief with the central scene of the cult: Mithras stabs the primordial Bull with a dagger, while some animals—a dog, a scorpion, and a snake, probably representing the constellations— take active part. Mithras was also identified with the Sun and with Apollo in the syncretistic atmosphere of late paganism.
While the archaeologists were working on their discovery, they noted a shaft in the vault, from which sunlight shone at midday near the altar. As the days went by, the light ray came closer and closer to the altar, until it shone directly on it on June 21st, the summer solstice. According to the philosopher Porphyry, who probably visited Caesarea in his youth and later married a Caesarean woman, the Mithraists believed that the soul entered the human body at birth and left it at death following the direction of the solstice. The Caesarea Mithraeum was then a faithful representation of the mythical cosmos!
In addition, the direction of the sunset on the summer solstice as seen from Caesarea has an extraordinary property: it passes almost exactly through the small island of Delos in the Aegean Sea, the legendary birthplace of Apollo, and through Delphi, the famous Apollinean oracular center not far from Athens. Further on, it passes through an impressive string of ancient cultic places devoted to the archangel Michael: San Michele del Gargano, Tempio di San Michele in Perugia, San Galgano, Sacra di San Michele della Chiusa, Mont Saint Michel, St. Michael's Mount, Skellig Michael, and others.
In fact, in ancient Christianity Michael was often invoked and worshiped in places where Mithraea have been found, as in Sutri, Heidelberg, Riegel, and many others. Michael killing the Dragon and protecting the souls serves much the same function as Mithras killing the Bull and giving directions to the souls entering and leaving mortality.

Prepare for another huge row about Branson, Souter et al #giveawaygrayling-- Andrew Adonis(@Andrew_Adonis ) February 5, 2018 Mr Grayling has actually been criticised for his handling of Virgin's East Coast franchise, which is ending in 2020, 3 years early. The National Audit Office has actually announced
it will examine the Federal government's handling of the franchise, which is a joint venture in between Virgin and Stagecoach.Ministers have said any idea taxpayers would run out pocket was wrong.Mick Whelan, leader of the train motorists'union Aslef, said:" It is outrageous that Virgin Trains has actually been handed a financially rewarding new agreement to run services on the west coast main line regardless of major criticism of its owners'handling of the east coast franchise. "And it is outrageous that this government-- dedicated, as
it states it is, to free and fair competition-- doesn't go through a proper tendering procedure but merely hands out an agreement extension to its chums."Not surprising that Richard Branson is smiling. He's got this government where he desires it. He deals with Chris Grayling as his little animal small dog. Why keep a dog and bring the stick yourself? Branson and Virgin have Chris Grayling and the DfT to fetch it for them.Lord Adonis, who stepped down last year as chairman of the National Facilities Commission, tweeted:"Awaiting parliamentary statement about next Grayling rail bailouts at 5.45-- intentionally after the marketplaces have closed. Prepare for another big
row about Branson, Souter et al. "Mr Grayling told MPs that Stagecoach had"got its sums incorrect "over the East Coast franchise, was set to lose practically ₤ 200 million and would only be allowed to run the service on a not-for-profit, short-term basis.Mr Grayling informed MPs that the East Coast franchise had "breached an essential monetary covenant." The choices were for Stagecoach to continue running services on a short-term, not-for-profit basis, or for the line to be directly operated by the Department for Transport through an"operator of last resort."The minister stated that having actually formerly announced that the franchise will run out of money and not last up until 2020, the situation was now "much more immediate."He said:"It is now clear that this franchise will just be able to continue in its current form for a matter of
an extremely little number of months and no more. "It's essential to be clear with your house,
this will not impact on the railway's everyday operations. Business will continue to operate as normal with no effect on services or personnel on the East Coast. "But it does indicate I will require to-- in the very future-- end the contract and put in location a successor arrangement to operate this railway." Provided the impending financial pressure the existing franchise is under, I am doing something about it now to secure travelers who depend upon these train services and guarantee ongoing worth for money for taxpayers."Contrary to widespread speculation,
no deal has actually been done and I have not yet made a decision on the successor operator to run the East Coast railway until the long-term prepare for the integration of track and train can begin in 2020." There is no question of anyone receiving
a bailout. Stagecoach will be held to all of its contractual commitments completely. "To anybody who believes that the almost ₤ 200 million that Stagecoach will lose is insignificant, let me put it into some context."The combined revenue of every single train operator in the nation was only ₤ 271 million last year."The loss relates to over 20% of Stagecoach's overall market worth.
it is a substantial quantity of cash by any measure, and it must likewise act as a stark warning to any company lured to over-bid in future."The top priority now is to make sure the continued smooth running of the East Coast franchise for its travelers.
"I have therefore asked my officials to conduct a full appraisal of the choices available to the Federal government to ensure connection of service up until we implement the East Coast Collaboration on the route from 2020."Mick Money, leader of the Rail, Maritime and Transportation union, said:"This disgraceful fiasco on one of Britain's primary rail routes needs to end and it requires to end now."RMT alerted that taking the East Coast lines out of the hands of the effective p ublic sector operation and handing them back to the personal speculators and spivs was a disaster in the making and we have actually been proved right.
"East Coast ought to be renationalised with immediate effect and the scale of the scandal revealed today must mark the point at which the entire rotten service of rail privatisation in Britain was called to a stop."RMT is requiring instant assurances that the countless rail employees caught in the crossfire of this turmoil will have their jobs and working conditions fully secured and underwritten. "Chris Grayling and the Tory Federal government have turned transportation in Britain, the country that gave the railways
to the world, into a worldwide laughing stock."He is a specialist in failure of the highest order and must resign."Mr Grayling likewise announced that Abellio, Arriva, Stagecoach (the existing incumbent)and a joint venture in between First and Trenitalia have actually been shortlisted to run the East Midlands franchise." As I have formerly stated, the Federal government has no sufficient legal premises to limit Stagecoach from bidding." But the competitors will be run on a fair, transparent basis, consisting of new safeguards against overbidding. Ultimately, the winner will be the company that offers the best service to passengers and finest value to the taxpayer,"he said.Shadow transportation secretary Andy McDonald said:"That Chris Grayling granted a lucrative contract to Virgin and Stagecoach on the West Coast while concurrently validating the same companies have actually collapsed on the East Coast reveals Government policy remains in chaos. "This is yet another Tory handout to personal investors at the public's cost."Stopping working train companies must not be awarded future contracts, however this Federal government is rewarding them for failure by extending their rewarding deal." The Transport Secretary's failure to withstand Virgin and Stagecoach is a disgrace. He's expected to safeguard taxpayers'interests, not compromise them to personal shareholders. "The system is broken which is why Labour will act in the general public interest by taking our railways back into public ownership."Anthony Smith, Transportation Focus primary executive, said:"Passengers'main concerns will be that the services that they rely on will continue to run and that quality is not compromised in any short-term arrangements that are put in location."We anticipate a transparent technique when any decisions are made. On the West Coast and East Midlands, we will be working with all bidders for future contracts to ensure that guests'expectations are met."

Is This The Future For Our Public Transportation?
A new self-driving bus has taken to the streets of Stockholm, Sweden. While the vehicle does have a “host” on board who stops and start it, the bus primarily works using sensors to navigate the roads.
The project, spearheaded by bus operator Nobia, claims this is the first of its kind in Scandinavia.
On first glance, the bus bears little resemblance to traditional public transport. It has room for 11 passengers and lacks a dashboard or a steering wheel.

Last opportunity to take part in study on major Herts County Council transport plan
Last chance to take part in survey on major Herts County Council transport plan

Hertfordshire County Council
Hertfordshire County Council
There’s less than one week left to respond to Hertfordshire County Council’s Local Transport Plan, which the council says will mean a major shakeup of the county’s transport networks in a bid to help them cope in the future.
The council wants your views on the future of transport
The public consultation on the plan closes this coming Tuesday, January 23.
The council’s vision for the future of transport in the county sees walking, cycling and public transport playing a much greater role in getting people around the county in a bid to cut down pressure on the increasingly busy roads.
Councillor Derrick Ashley, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “Most of the feedback we’ve had so far has been supportive of our plans for coping with growth in the county with a less car-focused transport network, but we’re keen to hear from as many people as possible before the end of the consultation.
“As a car driver I know that driving is the only realistic choice for a lot of journeys, but we can’t just keep building new roads and hoping that will solve congestion in the county. That’s not to say there will no future investment in roads – there will, but we must make the alternatives of walking cycling and public transport more attractive and accessible.
“The county’s population is growing and we’re going to need more infrastructure to support that, but we can’t just let that mean more and more cars on the roads. There simply isn’t the space. We need to get people out of their cars if we want to keep the county moving and our economy thriving.
“New technologies such as driverless cars will be with us sooner than we think, so we need to make decisions now to make sure we have the right kind of transport network for the future.
“Let us know by January 23 if you think we’ve got it right so we can make sure that Hertfordshire continues to be a county of opportunity.”
By 2031 the council estimates there will be 175,000 more people living in Hertfordshire using the transport system, as well as a growing populations outside the county travelling to and through Hertfordshire. As a result, a journey that currently takes an hour could take 15 minutes longer.
The council is therefore looking at smarter options such as prioritising cycling and walking, and using new technologies.
Some of the major schemes planned include:
• Creating ‘sustainable travel towns’ in Bishop’s Stortford, Broxbourne, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, St Albans, Stevenage, Watford and Welwyn Garden City
• Cycling route improvements in Baldock, Berkhamsted, Bishop’s Stortford, Borehamwood, Broxbourne, Harpenden, Hatfield, Hemel Hempstead, Hertford, Hitchin, Hoddesdon, Letchworth, Potters Bar, Rickmansworth, Royston, St Albans, Stevenage, Tring, Ware, Watford and Welwyn Garden City
• Extension of the Metropolitan line to Watford Junction
• Crossrail2 – a proposed new rail link connecting Broxbourne, Cheshunt and Waltham Cross to London
• A Bus Rapid Transit scheme to link Hemel Hempstead to Welwyn Garden City via St Albans
• A potential Hertford bypass
• A414 upgrades – to improve junctions around Hemel Hempstead, Hatfield and Welwyn Garden City, London Colney and East Hertfordshire to the north of Harlow
As well as major schemes, the county council is also proposing wider policies to manage the extra strain on our network and make alternatives to the car more practical. Key policies include:
• Designing streets and public places to put pedestrians and cyclists first, not cars
• Providing real alternatives to the car, particularly for journeys within towns
• Making sure that Hertfordshire is ready for the impact of new technologies, such as driverless cars
• Improving public transport, for example with more bus priority lanes
• Working to improve train services and stations in Hertfordshire
• Using intelligent systems to manage traffic on Hertfordshire’s roads in real time
• Improving road safety and managing traffic speeds effectively

More than 220,000 women sexually bothered on French public transportation over 2 years
More than 220,000 women were sexually bothered on public transport in over two years, the nationwide crime statistics firm said in its first report on the subject, explaining it as a "conservative price quote".
The Harvey Weinstein scandal in the United States has actually accelerated a rethink of mindsets towards sexual harassment in France, a country that cherishes its self-image as the land of seduction and romance.
"Although the general public mostly focuses on domestic violence, sexual violence committed on the street, on public transportation or in other public locations is simply as major, and merits more attention," the report said.France's National Observatory of Criminal Offense and Crook Justice(ONDRP)discovered that 267,000 individuals-- 85 percent of whom were females-- were sexually pestered on public transportation in between 2014 and 2015, consisting of kissing, groping, flashing and rape.It is the first time the ONDRP, which publishes an annual study on insecurity, has actually focused on sexualon public transport.Paris was voted the 3rd most woman-friendly city in a Thomson Reuters Foundation survey published in October, and ranked 4th least risky for sexual violence. But harassment stays prevalent, many stated on social networks." I was spat at, called a slut ... and one early morning groped by two chuckling males on a congested city,"Siobhán Dowling stated on
Twitter, explaining her time in Paris as a student.
