Transport NI to install four grit boxes at strategic points in Derry in case of extreme weather

Transport NI will install 4 large grit boxes at strategic points in Derry within 8 weeks in order to enhance regional communities' capability to deal with inclement weather.Sinn Féin Foyleside councillor Mickey Cooper stated the roadways authority has accepted regularly replenish the silos in advance of and throughout particulary cold spells. Sinn Fein councillor, Mickey Cooper.He said: "I have actually been lobbying Transportation NI hard on this concern for a long time and it's anticipated the boxes will remain in location before the end of the monetary year.

"Through the scheme four big grit boxes will be found in Creggan, Shantallow, Waterside and the rural district.

"The logistics will include consignments of grit being offered by 'road service' for collection and circulation by neighborhood organisations during durations of severe weather. The grit will be saved in packages which will be administered by the regional community organisations."

Colr. Cooper stated the plan will service locations that may not tick all packages needed to receive Transport NI's gritting schedule.

"It can be then distributed into areas of the city by where grit boxes are not offered by Roadways Service as the streets in concern do not satisfy the requirements for a grit box. The community organisations will be able to communicate with elected associates and other community activists to recognize where the need for grit exists which will ensure the supply is utilized most effectively.He stated"citizens of

streets which are routinely affected by icy paths however which do not have a grit box will be pleased this extra service is now offered".
