A ₤ 70 Billion Plan To Shock Manchester Transportation Starts Today

The seventy billion pound masterplan for improving transport in the North of England - with a big focus on Manchester - is being rolled out today by Transport for North.

Leaders from around the North came together to publish the "Transport for the North’s draft Strategic Transport Plan."

The thirty year plan is aimed at improving transport infrastructure investment and Transport for North are estimating the plan could deliver a £100 billion economic boost and 850,000 additional jobs by 2050. The estimated spending for the plan "£150 per northern citizen per year, or £2-2.3 billion per year"

Transport for North was first established in 2015 as part of the 'Northern Powerhouse' proposal established by the 2010-2015 coalition government. And it aims to be the first sub-regional transport body in the UK by April this year.

In a statement John Cridland, Transport for the North Chairman, said,

“For the first time, civic and business leaders and transport operators are speaking with one voice on transport to make sure the North fulfils its potential. Our plan proposes a revolutionary investment programme that will make it possible to travel to high quality jobs. This is an ambitious programme that will improve our roads and railways, and will also drive a sea change in skills development in the North and ensuring we meet that historic gap in investment."

Today also marked the first of Transport for the North’s public consultation on the plan with engagement events running until April 17.
