Walkers Transport (http://), is backing the Road Haulage Association (RHA) ‘She’s RHA’ campaign geared around recruitment and championing women in the industry.
The contribution of women in haulage is often unseen as it remains a male-dominated working environment. Only 8% of the 1.8million people that work in the haulage industry are female and only 1% of HGV drivers are women. Government statistics show that by 2022, the industry needs to recruit 1.2 million more people and part of the solution to that is to recruit more women.
Walkers Transport is committed to create a more diverse haulage industry. Boasting two depots in Leeds and Manchester, as well as additional storage sites, the firm employees near to 300 staff. In the past 12 months, Group Managing Director, Richard Simpson has made 3 critical appointments, all of which are women, including Amy Russell (Group HR Manager), Zoe Lunn (Group Health & Safety Manager) and Victoria Reynard (Group Sales Manager)
Richard said: “First and foremost, recruitment is all about finding the best candidate for the job, it’s not about gender, it’s about which candidate can bring the most to our business. Amy, Zoe and Victoria have certainly brought a huge amount of energy to our business and in my view, have been excellent appointments. The results of these talented women speak for themselves. As we embark on an ambitious growth programme, these roles are essential components to our future success. We’re delighted to be supporting the ‘She’s RHA’ philosophy within our organisation and will continue to do so.”
Alex Minto from the RHA added: “We believe that it’s only through better representation of women within haulage that will make more women want to join the industry. The haulage industry needs to publicise that women have an important role to play. This is the rationale behind ‘She’s RHA’ which celebrates women in haulage, publicising women in the sector – something that Walkers Transport is doing extremely well.”
