Chargers have to meet a set of guidelines to be featured on EVRoam, which the vast majority of New Zealand’s charging network does.

“Charging infrastructure is no longer isolated in single purpose apps, but is now widely available for third parties to use as a ‘single source of truth’ for New Zealand public charging infrastructure. This has been made possible by a collaborative effort across energy and automotive partners,” Mr Wilson says.

While Norway has a similar system in place, EVRoam is the first anywhere in the world to be a partnership between the government and private charging network operators – much of Norway’s charging network is government-owned, with the entire network being regulated by the government.

“In this respect, it is a world first, helping New Zealand transition towards a low emission transport future. This collaboration is a credit to our energy industry, already world renowned for its over 80 percent renewable profile,” said Wilson.

NZRoam information is currently available through the NZ Transport Agency’s website, the NZ Automobile Association website and TomTom, with Google Maps coming on board in the near future.

EVRoam provides data that lets drivers know if a charger is able to be used or not, either because it is in use or out of action for some reason. Information about the charger is also part of the system, such as whether or not it costs to use it and plug types available.

Live information direct from the charging providers is gathered on charging infrastructure that meets government guidelines, so drivers can be confident they have the ability to use the charger.

While there are some chargers around the country that don’t meet the guidelines (and are therefore not included in EVRoam), NZ Transport says those that do “represent the vast majority of public charging infrastructure around New Zealand.”

The agency also says that any charging operators that come into the electric vehicle public charging market in the future can use EVRoam to promote their chargers to customers as long as their chargers meet the guidelines for a safe, reliable and interoperable public charging network.

Currently EVRoam information is available online at the NZ Transport website and the AA website.
